At our February event Suzanne Unsworth of Rubus Associates shared with us how to use our time effectively to help us succeed, teaching us the skills to make today the first day of the rest of our lives!

Suzanne started the event by helping us to think about time and more importantly how quickly it goes!  For example, we are already 10% into this year and what have we done with it?   We all realised that our time goes so quickly as we all play so many roles in our lives; mother, daughter, employer, wife, cleaner, the list is endless.  With 24 hours in a day, the average person will sleep for 8 hours a day which leaves us with 16 hours to get everything else done which is clearly impossible!

First and foremost Suzanne encouraged us all to think about what was important to us by writing down the 4 things that are most  important to us and then put them in order – no easy task!  We were then asked to think about how good we were at spending quality time with the 4 things we listed over the past few days which made us all realise that we need to make more of an effort to make time for these things!

But how do we do this?  PLAN, PLAN and PLAN again!  Suzanne then shared with us the art of planning – put the big things first, then the middle things and then you can fit in all the other things around them.  You should spend approximately 14 minutes every day planning and this will help keep you on track, but you also need to prioritise.  To help you prioritise decide on the level of importance of your things to do by how much impact it will have on you ans then make your ‘to do’ list.  Remember when you have completed a task to always ‘tick’ it off – a tick leaves a more positive feeling than crossing something out.  You can even take planning your ‘to do’ list even further by allocating tasks a priority rating, for example;

A = Must be done today

B = Should be done today

C = Could be done today

Then number each A, B and C task in order 1, 2, 3, etc.

So, we know how to plan and prioritise our time to make the most of it, but it is also important to work when at your best by making sure you have as few distractions as possible; put your phone on silent, turn your email alert off, and then finally make time for you as well!

Remember it’s your time so make it your success!
